Barbarella
1968

To seek out new life, and new fornications…

Inspired opening. Cheap but alluring. Jane Fonda is way too good for this, but I’m grateful.

The Towering Inferno
1974

The cautionary tale of hubris and cut corners. Epic-level pyro effects. Unnecessarily long.

My favorite part was how long it took the rich party goers to even consider taking the stairs.

Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster
1964

Evokes the feeling of playing with your action figures in the dirt as a kid. Rodan and Godzilla battle is gold.

I have been missing out. These films are pure, campy fun.

Godzilla is genuinely adorable, an uncoordinated puppy.

Mothra vs. Godzilla
1964

“Ow! Who put that there?!”
~ Godzilla, probably

This is my first time watching a Godzilla film in a very, very long time and I literally did not know what I was missing. Absolutely delightful - the miniature work especially.

Red Desert
1964

This would make a good companion film for Melancholia (2011).

Interesting to use color by employing it so sparingly.

Blood and Black Lace
1964

The giallo era kicks off with a respectable throat clearing in this whodunnit web of deceit. The lighting work is, of course, superb.

Game Night
2018

Just a fun comedic thriller about a competitive obsession and need for attention that gets a little out of hand. Lessons are learned, but it’s the fun that counts.

Kwaidan
1964

This was such a slog, despite its obvious cultural value and deep lessons. Four well-told Japanese ghost story parables with very nice costuming and sets. It just didn’t connect for me.

Mrs. Doubtfire
1993

As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to appreciate its exploration of separation, reconciliation, balance, parenthood, and jealousy more and more. And it’s an incredible vehicle for William’s range and talent.

Beverly Hills Cop III
1994

A hollowed out shell of its original self, now a grotesque, lazy caricature. Silly in the wrong ways. Murphy phones in his performance.

Beverly Hills Cop II

Solid, but everything is a step down from the original. It feels like a they were going through a checklist trying to recapture the magic.

Beverly Hills Cop
1984

“Foul mouth? Fuck you!”

The opening of this film has to be amongst the greatest of all time. And it never really falls off after that either. Superbly cast with an effortless blend of comedy, drama, and action. It’s almost perfect.

Unexpectedly substantive and quintessentially Eddie Murphy. Worth it for the undercover Murphy and Hall moments alone.

Trading Places
1983

Exceptional rags-to-riches-to-rags comedy targeting prejudice and privilege through the lens of economics and speculation. Also a heist movie with a surprisingly wonkish climax.

True Grit
2010

A determined girl, grizzled marshal, and stuck-up ranger work together to track a killer. Chock-full of heart, humor, and inimitable Coen Bros. charm.

I like to think he made a few changes.

Strong post-apocalyptic fiction with a surprisingly stacked cast.

Grounded tragic historical fiction mixed with parable and a very human approach to exploring the inhumane.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
1964

As an English speaker, I have to wonder how much of this mostly works for me because it’s in French. The sing-song dialogue looks so mundane in the subtitles, but it also sounds so whimsical and romantic to the ear.

This is what they mean by “kill your darlings.” Absolutely full of creative ideas and with an interesting premise, but it wanders too much.

Red Beard
1965

An ambitious doctor learns empathy and compassion by trial and fire under the tutelage of a saint-like community doctor. Once again, Kurosawa gets a little too expository at the end, but it does little harm. Charming, humanistic, and audacious.

Le Bonheur
1965

I can’t get over how clumsy the love-making looks in some of these older films. Is he kissing her? Or is his facing tripping over her neck? I cannot tell.

Anyway, it is an interesting and tragic exploration of fidelity and gender roles.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

Exactly what I feared The Hunger Games would become. Tropey and melodramatic. Prequels should build or reinforce continuity, not undermine it.
