During territory establishment, individuals would then benefit by reforming prior territory boundaries, thereby reducing conflicts through interdependence.

Our framework is mainly applied to birds but it can also be extended to other seasonal breeders.

We hypothesise that non-breeding social behaviour among neighbours can function as a strategy to reduce future territoriality costs.

By maintaining dear-enemy relationships with neighbours and benefitting from sociality, individuals increase survival and reduce turnover in the neighbourhood.
