This first raid caused 1,300 casualties and displaced 25,000 people. By the end of the third raid in April 1945, 80% of the city center had been destroyed.

from Gibraltar to Benson for repairs. F/Lt Roy Johnson was plotted crossing the coast of the UK at 1400hrs but 15 minutes later his aircraft smashed into the ground. Roy was found just over a mile from the crash site, his parachute having not deployed.

14 aircraft were lost over enemy territory or at sea, with a further 3 crashing in the UK. Some 23 aircraft were damaged not by enemy fire, but by bird strikes from their low-level operations.

Nov 1943, and is of the launch site at Bois Carre, near Yvrench on the Somme. The same site is shown after the attacks which started on this day.

James Aitkin would tragically be lost just a few weeks later on 21st January 1944 when he failed to return from a reconnaissance…
