I believe Super Mario Galaxy took inspiration from Final Fantasy VIII here. Observatory and Balamb Garden, both overworlds, have a similar design. Also the music is a waltz very much like... well, the Waltz for... yes, the Moon, from FFVIII. Even it takes a bit of the Balamb's theme.
