in the specific "anime slash" sphere my intuition is that to some extent we're still feeling aftereffects from that era of "it's bad to write darkfic/whump about Y/OI because you're taking a positive queer story and turning it into just another tragedy" but that's as far as i can even posit

and conversely, ignoring the context of who the author is and what they believe can often lead to unfairly punitive interpretations of challenging works by marginalized authors, because unfamiliar readers perceive a depiction of personally experienced bigotry or violence as endorsement

also, disregarding the author's identity and beliefs as context in literary analysis does not change the actual substance of the text. death of the author doesn't mean "this bigoted text isn't bigoted anymore because it belongs to fans who are fixing it now"
