I think you're conflating processing power, consciousness, and life, and these are all different things. Many forms of life are conscious but not necessarily "intelligent." There are many forms of intelligence that raw computing power cannot emulate. And--

I don't think you can compare the creation of life (which afaik we *don't* know the origin of) and the billions of years of evolution leading to humans to "make a computer with enough processing power and it will become conscious (somehow)"

I feel like if they can draw the brains they could draw the little animals too -- or trace over / include some public domain photographs. This could have been done without AI.

No, it is not. The idea is if we can just pour enough processing power into these things they'll become conscious, but we have no evidence that is possible or even plausible. It's based in magical thinking and scifi stories.
