Why is the City Club providing a platform to speakers I really disagree with? The City Club has always been the place in Cleveland that welcomes leaders from all sides so that community members can make up their own minds. We do that in local races and issues, in statewide races and issues, and with national and international matters, too! So we welcome to our stage leaders on the political right for the same reason we welcome their counterparts on the left: Democracy works better when communities have access to the leaders who are shaping our shared future. What should I do if I disagree with a programming decision at the City Club? We'd love for you to buy a ticket and ask a challenging question of the speaker. The other thing you can do is to suggest an alternative speaker who can present another perspective. We tend to lean on Justice Louis Brandeis's advice that the "remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence." (Whitney v. California) He had a lot more to say about liberty and freedom of speech, but that gets to the practical heart of the matter. Let's have the debate. We're not here to silence one side or the other. We're here to learn. OK, but aren't you worried about losing democracy? Of course we are! In every generation, there are moments where it feels as if we might lose democracy. The founders of our nation saw the whole thing as an experiment unlikely to succeed. And through wars, social upheavals, political reforms, single party rule, the republic has persisted because individual people have worked very hard to keep communities informed, institutions strong, and the rule of law intact and respected. Our commitment to keeping democracy strong is exactly why we do the work we do. That's why we were founded in 1912, and it's why through two world wars, a depression, the McCarthy era, the upheaval of the 1960s, the Civil Rights era, the Vietnam War, and every economic calamity of the last 112 years, we've continued to do this work or welcoming voices and perspectives from all sides. What does this have to do with free speech? The City Club is an independent institution, so we're not bound by the First Amendment the way the Federal Government and other public entities are. Nevertheless, we believe freedom of speech is something we should celebrate and demonstrate a commitment to. Freedom of speech means neither side gets to determine what anyone is allowed to say (as long as there isn't any kind of incitement to violence). And a commitment to freedom of speech— and freedom of expression, freedom of inquiry, academic freedom - looks like providing a platform to people with diverse points of view on thorny topics. The Creed of the City Club speaks to this. Ralph Hayes wrote it in 1916, and it's still very resonant: / welcome to my platform the discussion of any theory or dogma of reform; but I bind my household to the espousal of none of them, for l cherish the freedom of every person's conviction and each of my kin retains [their] own responsibility.
