I am a writer, teacher, spouse, and parent. This is a space to share what it’s like to be a writer with neurodivergence and or mental illness.
Winter Solstice. My favorite day. The oranges are dry and ready, my wife made a chocolate cake, and a bean soup is in the slow cooker. I took a bit more time creating my 13 wishes this year. I know this time is difficult for many. I hope for all to have warmth, peace, and love this Yule.

It’s that time of year again. Two days until Winter Break and my 8th grade classes are watching The Outsiders. This photo is a few years old; I haven’t slicked my hair back in a while. I think I need a hair cut, but I’ll go to the salon instead of using a switchblade.

Around ten years ago, I had a student write a fantastic short story about a professional Operation player who participated in tournaments. No spoilers, but could you imagine what could go wrong? Choose your own game: Sorry, Trouble, Uno...Trivial Pursuit!

I am working to recenter the idea that, ultimately, I write to make magic. I write to process the deep, hidden wounds with the hopes that others with similar experiences can process right along with me. Authors, why do you write?

For the longest time, I had requisites for creativity. The right chair, the right beverage, the right pen, the right candle. Hell, even the right sweater. Then I realized my creativity couldn’t wait for perfect conditions. What do you absolutely need to be creative?

Writing prompt Wednesday! Write a scene in which your character is in the throes of illness. Use sensory details and internal thoughts to show the reader what the character is experiencing.

I consider myself a plantser. I write, plan, write more, etc. I'm beginning to question my choices. Terry Pratchett said, "The first draft is just you telling yourself the story." Have I taken it too far? Should a 60,000-100,000 word draft act as an outline? How do you write your stories?

I'm taking a month away from social media with the hopes of reconnecting with my creativity before continuing to build this community. Drink water. Do your best to get a good night's sleep.

When Beulah asked Stella for her blood in Vines and Fire, Stella had no idea what she agreed to. Here's a taste of where it started and how it's going in Binds and Breath, Book Two in the Goddess of the Trees series.

Well, hello there, Bluesky. I left the bad place like so many others. I'm interested in connecting with queer and BIPOC authors, readers, gardeners and teachers.
