I often wonder what sort of collections of private letters will exist. The replacement of physical letters with email is surely going to mean the scope of such collections tumbles off a cliff from the late 1990s. I know I've already lost access to emails that I'd still have, were they letters
As we start to think historically about the recent past (from late 1990s onwards), we run into problems about how to access this past. The period c. 1995-2005 saw a lot of stuff go online or stored electronically, but not archived properly. There is a big gap in the paper trail.
