Francia Márquez, who led the march and won the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2018, became Colombia's Vice President in 2022. Raised in La Toma, she began her activism at just 13 years old.

Saturday reading: Thinking-feeling with the Earth (Escobar, 2019). He closes a chapter with words from 22 women who marched from La Toma, Cauca to Bogotá (Nov 2014) - hundreds of kilometers - to resist backhoe mining that poisoned their river.
Met with death threats, they marched as a last resort.
The text reads as: "We are Black women from the north of Cauca, descendants of African men and women who were enslaved, with knowledge about the ancestral value embedded in our territories. We know many of our ancestors had to pay for our freedom with their lives; we know of the blood that our ancestors spilled to get these lands; we know they worked for years and years in slavery to leave these lands to us. They taught us that you don’t sell land; they understood that we needed to ensure that our people could permanently remain in our territory. ... Four centuries have passed, and their memory is our memory; their practices are our practices transmitted through our grandparents; our daughters and sons continue today reaffirming our identity as free peoples. ... Today our lives are in danger and the possibilities of existing as Afrodescendant Peoples is minimal. Many men and women are threatened with death. We women have lived from ancestral mining, an activity that enabled our ancestors to buy their freedom, and ours. This activity is linked with agriculture, with fishing, with hunting and to ancestral knowledges that our elders and our midwives have inculcated in us so that we can remain as peoples. Because our love for life itself is stronger than our fear of death, we convene all of the solidarity of those opposed to illegal mining and opposed to the threats against the people that protect Life and the Ancestral Territories." (p. 44)
