I was also pushed away from art for some years and I'm sorry that heppened to you. But I'm glad you've picked it up again!

I would draw with old wooden pencils on lined paper because printer paper was exclusively for "professional" use in my household.

I then moved into mechanical pencils in sketchbooks and still do that as my main form of traditional to this day!

Even if they didn't want to go "out their way" for art supplies, surely you have pencil and pen SOMEWHERE. Maybe even highlighters.
