War of the Worlds (2005) is some visceral post-9/11 shit. Plays like a perfect movie in 2025 because our standards have been ground down but I remember reaction at the time was luke-warm. Helps to have some distance from the period it was made in. Has nothing to do with HG Wells.

Watching War of the Worlds. It used to bother me it wasn’t set in 1900 like the novel but I see now why it had to be set in modern times: it’s about 9/11.

People use tech more than ever so why does it feel like the industry is on the verge of collapse?

My film will be about aliens.

The movie Parasite has a lot of olfactory ethics but bluesky jumped ship on twitter before that topic went viral so nobody knows what that is.

Eyes Wide Shut is more of a Halloween movie, in the sense that it’s set on Christmas Eve, the last day before the holy day which is when all the Devil’s and Witches come out because it’s the last chance. Same idea as Hallow’s Eve and also as in Gogol’s The Night Before Christmas. Just a holier day.

Watched Parasite. Can’t explain it but this is a Christmas movie.

The USA is an authoritarian dictatorship under Trump and he should be impeached and removed for the sake of their own country but also the globe.

The Hunters by James Salter is about a fighter pilot in the Korean war. He’s struggling to shoot down MiGs which is the only achievement anybody values. Whether he engages the enemy or not is a matter of chance but only results are valued. It’s this perverse human value system.

Microblogging has done much to improve my literacy. Lots of insight into reader response and how varied it is. People’s interpretations of things and also learning common things to avoid if I don’t want to piss off various groups. It’s been a wealth of insight.

Picked up The Departed, Avatar, The Devil Wears Prada, War of the Worlds and Million Dollar Baby from St Vincent de Paul’s for $12AUD. To purchase a movie online it’s like $5 and you have got to take care of storage yourself. With streaming I can’t give it as a gift when I’m finished with it.

Quentin Tarantino being obnoxious is not really enough to cancel him over. My copy of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood arrived in the post today. I got really into Bruce Lee during a manic episode so I’m curious about this controversial portrayal. I read his commentaries on the martial way.

I don’t know which one is ROTS, Revenge of the Sith or Rise of the Skywalker.

Applied for a photo ID at Service NSW. I feel like Hell is just waiting for your number to be called. The uncertainty about how much trouble it’s going to be. It was not so much trouble but this is coming from the relief of someone being punched in the face ten times and then they stop punching.

I’m glad they’re interviewing children about the social media ban now but would have been better to do this a year ago when it was announced and keep it up. I know that’s not how “news” works but this was a thing we saw coming.

Social media is how kids organise their social lives now. When I was a kid you would just show up at their house like Arthur Macarthur. I am glad we did away with this. Or some horrible brat would call you on the landline and ask to come over and give you a permanent phobia of answering the phone.

The concept of “literary fiction” probably needs some unpacking but I was just thinking if this is your genre then reading widely requires covering the whole history of the genre and not just the last five years. “Read widely in your genre but mainly recent titles” doesn’t work for literary fiction.

Youtube isn’t a social media platform anymore than Netflix is.

Picked up my guitar after a long break. I hardly ever play anymore. It’s weird that I am better after a break, much more fluid. The callouses are gone from my fingers though, I can’t press down as hard.

My episodic memory is exceptional but I am not good at rote memorisation. I remember things that are meaningful. I don’t remember things well from repetition.

Reading Women in Love is like being at a trance but you’re not in a trance. D.H. Lawrence is on a different wavelength.

People want anti-capitalist, anti-fascist art but for some reason they want it in corporate IP targeted at children from companies they’re supposed to be boycotting and on platforms that are destroying cinema. Gonna make my own film.

Wanted to read what I said about David Bowie but I had to scroll down. I just use social media to write notes on things I am engaged with anyway. As an archive for my own use it’s not that helpful because search functions are dead now. I rarely consult them, it’s just good practice to keep notes.

I watched the Kristen Stewart interview that’s floating around. At the end she asks herself if she really cares about people or is just afraid to be alone. That’s a level of insight most celebrities don’t have about themselves.
