Not robots?

Anyway, that was kinda my rant about AI, and how Vocaloid and Cevio and SynthV suck but not that much. And how we should hire humans except Miku. And Kafu. And Gumi and Teto and all the rest.

There’s no easy solution. I doubt there ever will be.

Vocaloid: ethical death trap since 03

This isn’t a defence of AI, btw. Fuck AI art and writing, that’s just lazy. And hire human actors, they’re so much easier. AI has an environmental effect that needs to be addressed.

Which is why I sometimes can’t stomach the fact that I like Vocaloid. Because surely producers should hire humans?

It explains it a lot better than I can, at least. There’s no conclusion I can draw, other than we need to approach everything with nuance. Yes, even AI. Even GenAI.

All of this started because I thought it might be neat streaming myself tuning to my friends on Discord. But then I remembered that oh yeah. AI.

God I hate “AI”. The term.

Anyway! Theres a really good TikTok about this sort of thing. About how yes, some Vocaloids are Gen AI. And it’s not bad.

I first got back into SynthV in March 2023. This internal debate has been going on since July of that year.

There’s no one answer that will give me everything I want, ultimately. Even after the AI bubble bursts, vocaloid will remain a machine capable of replacing humans, and has been since 2003.

So does that mean I can continue to make silly synthv covers? Honestly, I don’t know. It’s kinda causing a crisis of faith between being fully ethical and enjoying myself. I like tuning, but if my work is cut from the cloth that replaces a human, can I truly support it?

It’s just so murky and hard to parse through. Is vocaloid and other vocal synths like it ethical? By AI standards, yes. Its sources all consented to it (mostly, see Uni SV). By the standards of replacing humans, absolutely not. They’re robots, they can never properly replace humans.

Sure, I can see Vocaloid taking someone out of work, but at the end of the day you need a human to make the songs, right? Then again, what is the difference between promoting a singing bot to sing in place of a human and a speaking bot to speak in place of a human?

Ok yeah, they’re pretty dry. Not my favourite.
