Very interesting observation! Not enough superstars on bsky? Or inflation of "followership" due to starter packs, etc.?

Maybe that's what bsky is missing: well read teenagers? :)

I now checked bsky demographics: turns out, there's many young ppl. But: almost every second person is from the US. Hence, not much cultural diversity and abundance of daunting US politics

I'm glad to see your optimism! Maybe I'm wrong here... The difference, however, may be that you have wider interests. Mine are fairly narrow: academia, and a particular one. And that layer is thin and not very active on bsky

I agree: it makes sense it invest time and effort into networks that have less chances to disappear one day. I think that shittification is inevitable, but in some places it's slower than in others

Trying to recreate the old days best I can 😁

I also suspect it's cultural. Do you think it's a generational shift, in a way? Or a different design of most new platforms? Or some mix of the two?

Hehe, don't forget to share the link to this column 😅

Maybe, but (I hear) Twitter was fun even before the algorithm, just with the basic chronological feed based on ppl you follow. Which is what's available on Bluesky. And still...
November 25, 2025 at 1:41 PM
I do agree that it's much less fun. But I'd be curious to figure out why...
November 25, 2025 at 1:37 PM
Maybe... Yet, here you are 😅

I really miss those substantive conversations: bouncing ideas around etc. Maybe the discourse of "social-media-isn't-the-place-for-substantive-conversations" has won?
November 25, 2025 at 1:34 PM
Not many good news lately – that's for sure
November 25, 2025 at 1:31 PM
But Instagram isn't great for academic purposes, no? It lacks features that facilitate discussion. (Which was *the* thing for me in old Twitter)
November 25, 2025 at 12:40 PM
I agree with these points. However, my network is basically rebuilt: almost all the people from old Twitter are here. Yet the activity is much, much lower. Do you think this may also be a cultural shift: less trust in social media, idk?

It's been a pleasure! Thank you for the invitation.
