Exactly. UAlberta Press is fairly small and doesn't even print their own books and doesn't have a dedicated marketing department. So getting an advance wasn't even on the table.

I haven't heard of anyone at a uni press getting an advance. If you know which presses give them, I'd love to hear about them!

Ugh that's awful.

Yeah it's nothing. Hence trying for a traditional publisher next time around...

Yeah I don't think they have the money for advances. Agreed that their regular authors are financially supported by their job. I figured since this was my first book I'd go through a uni press, but I really want an agent for my next book to go through a traditional publisher.

Yeah the main difference with a uni press is that you don't get an advance. With traditional publishing, you get money to write your book. 1/3 up front, 1/3 when you submit the book, and 1/3 when the book is published. Amounts of advances vary wildly, from $10k to $90k.

No it's the same. You sign a contract that says you get X% royalties, and uni presses are pretty similar to traditional presses.
November 15, 2025 at 7:15 PM
Yes we get royalties. Which are really a pittance when you consider the time put into writing the book.

The code is on the slider on their website. It's iH25 for paperback and iE25 for e-pub. Thanks for ordering!
