Exactly. UAlberta Press is fairly small and doesn't even print their own books and doesn't have a dedicated marketing department. So getting an advance wasn't even on the table.

Yeah I don't think they have the money for advances. Agreed that their regular authors are financially supported by their job. I figured since this was my first book I'd go through a uni press, but I really want an agent for my next book to go through a traditional publisher.

Yeah the main difference with a uni press is that you don't get an advance. With traditional publishing, you get money to write your book. 1/3 up front, 1/3 when you submit the book, and 1/3 when the book is published. Amounts of advances vary wildly, from $10k to $90k.
