I’ve been reading a lot of Yuval Harari’s history of humankind and he has this take on how humans in large groups are inspired/controlled by the stories we tell ourselves. Religions used to be biggest force but maybe religion is being replaced with what you described on your reply.

The mob mentality described by @aselrod.bsky.social is key. Other attitudes commonly portrayed are also corrosive: that social life is a competition, that wealth is paramount, that punishment for wrongs should be swift and extrajudicial, that aging and death are to be denied, more.

Thank you for writing it. It definitely resonated and I’m here still thinking about how, in so many ways, all of us contributed or at least willingly partook in creating an environment that is destroying liberal Democracy. Too many of us are guilty of the sins you pointed out.
