White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis)

Shhh...you can't see me...
Little brown sparrow bird hiding in a tangle of azalea branches. Body is light gray with brown on the wings. Head has a brown stripe from the beak to the back of the head and another brown stripe from the corner of the eye to the back of the head. There's a bit of yellow just above the beak between the eyes and a white throat patch below the beak that looks like a gnome's beard which is why we call them the gnomie birds at our house. Legs are orange.

Eastern Box Turtle a little grumpy after an abrupt relocation off the road one rainy afternoon. Turtle is about 6-8 inches, dark brown with golden starburst patterns on the individual scutes. Front legs are light brown, eyes are red. He's just starting to peak out of his shell to go strutting across the weedy yard to go do turtle things. First time discovering this individual...yay more turtles!

Was driving these when yours was released. Both had to be permanently retired in 2008...rust.

Still drive a Subaru. It's a 2010 and I really don't want to "upgrade".

An all white mushroom growing out of the leaf litter. Short and chonky, it has white bumps all over the cap. The stem is thick and it looks like it's wearing a fringed skirt, or like the leafy bit at the top of a Corinthian Greek column. The cap looks a bit like those flowered? caps some women wore in the late 60s or in the 70s. Fancy hat, fancy skirt, she's ready for a fun night out!

Fiesty the box turtle sitting in the palm of a gloved hand to show off her tiny stature. She is a brown turtle with faint orange sunburst markings on her scutes. She was very wiggly and not at all scared of us handling her so we decided to call her Fiesty. Photos of her unique markings will help us ID her when we find her again.

The kid likes to make origami. Here's a couple of parrots they made for an environmental art show. The birds are designed to perch on your monitor.
Two origami parrots folded to look like a cockatoo and cockatiel. The larger one is white and is sitting on a real branch. The second, to the right of the first, is green with pink cheeks and is about half the size of the first. It's perched on my kid's finger the way you would hold a real bird. There is an cedar tree in the background.

One last sip before the big trip.

Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) preparing for it's epic adventure. Migrating Monarchs can reach speeds of 6mph. Wingspan is 3.5–4.0 in.

Not sure if this one is male or female as the ID mark on wing is covered.

An Eastern Tailed-Blue (Cupido comyntas) is a common butterfly of eastern North America. It's distinguished from other blues in its range by a small thin tail. Wingspan is 21 to 29 mm.

Don't know the ID of snail or mushrooms. Slug might grow up to be a tiger slug but to soon to tell for me.

Snail's shell is less than 1inch.

Legends surrounding the Woolly Bear aka Isabella Tiger Moth (Pyrrharctia isabella) caterpillar say that if their rusty band is wide, it will be a mild winter. The more black there is, the more severe the winter.

A Red Milkweed Beetle (Tetraopes tetrophthalmus) is a #beetle in the longhorn beetle family.

The long antennae actually bisects the eye. Now that's creepy!

They feast on milkweed (big surprise) so they are toxic too!

A bird of size at up to 29in tall and wingspan nearing 5ft.

Its meal is just out of sight at its feet.

Chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis) is a species of mantis native to Asia, accidentally introduced to the US. They are longer than our native mantids reaching just over 4in.

This one was hanging out a little too close to the hummingbird feeder and was relocated.
