Hi! I'm Shelby. I'm a loud weirdo who talks about living with ADHD, math and math ed, random fun things that other people post, geeky things, and convos with my kiddo (TT). Doing my best to be kind for however long I'm on this blue dot in a vast galaxy.

This is Winston. He's a spoiled little baby.

Y'all notice that the list of professions the DoE is trying to declassify (nursing, counseling, social work) are led by/largely comprised of female practitioners AND are mandated reporters? I'm sure this has nothing to do with reducing protection of children or shifting demographics.

I think this should get more media attention, but it won't. People are just going to find out the hard way.

Trying so hard not to pass my disdain of legacy curriculum publishers onto my kid, but y'all make it so hard when your little online program marks a PARTIAL PRODUCTS problem wrong because he didn't list them in the order you wanted him to. 😒

Ok it's late so we probably can't get into this tonight BUT tomorrow, can we talk about this standard?

"By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers."
(Last sentence of 3.OA.C.7)

What does this mean to you?

On Friday at Noon (EDT) I am giving a talk in the New York Combinatorics Seminar. The title is: "Mathematical illustration through a combinatorial lens" in which I share my decade-long journey as a mathematical artist and jewelry maker and how it intertwines with my combinatorics research.

Forbidden subgraph earrings - wear a theorem on your ears! Kuratowski's theorem says that a graph is planar if and only if it contains neither a K5 nor a K3,3 as a subgraph. Here are those two forbidden subgraphs.

So saddened by the news that we have lost Alice Wong. It was an honor to know her and learn from her. May the lessons she shared continue to guide us for years to come.

Those of us who are SA survivors are used to the mass shrug in response to even the most overt evidence of horrific behavior. Epstein's crimes and the complicity of many influential figures involved have been known for decades (’05 to be exact). It's never mustered much interest or consequence.

I had a really great morning introducing someone to the wonder that is Partial Quotients. (My phone autocorrected to winner and I almost left it in because hell yeah Partial Quotients is a winner!)

This is the strategy that completely rocked my world and made me fall in love with elementary math.

This framing that it was Jackson doing it is not how they normally put stuff like this. They’re trying to lie to you with the truth. It was a legal maneuver designed to minimize the delay and held until as late as possible to give time for states to irreversibly process the payments.

I wrote up an experience using a slow reveal graph with a fourth grade class for Edutopia. ✨
By revealing graphs piece by piece, teachers can build student curiosity and guide them to more effectively make sense of data! 📊

"The slow reveal graphs routine both honors the complexity of data visualizations & creates accessible entry points for every learner. Because revision is expected & careful observation is valued, students focus less on being 'right' or 'wrong' & more on making sense of the data together."
