Simple living in a log cabin along the Snake River, plus catch-&-release fly-fishing. Out West.
Caught tail end of around 500 honking Canada Geese flying overhead to land in nearby winter wheat. Kinda' gray day out, dropping to freezing tonight. Winter alerts in neighboring WY, but not E ID side.

Neighbor called me at 7AM, as had a bull & cow moose in his field. Yest, on my walk, scared up a cow moose from day bed, in our meadow. She also has this yr's calf with her. Today, moose tracks all over the place. Musta' been moose party last night! Photo: most likely a cow moose, boot size 13.

Dec 7, 1941...84 yrs ago. 12 remaining Pearl Harbor survivors. Impt date for my family. 2 brothers immediately enlisted: Navy & Army Air Corps. Dad wouldn't turn 17 for another yr, then signed up. Navy Amphibious Forces. All 3 were in Pacific Theater. They're gone now, but the memories remain.

Scene on WeatherNation this AM. Dammit Jackson Hole! Keep cameras on your WY stretch of the Snake! Lol!

Down along the Snake. Saw 3 muledeer, fresh moose tracks & 2 Bald Eagles. Back home. Fire's going. Gray, drizzling, overcast & foggy outside. Gear's drying by fire, hot cup of potato soup &...no schedule to keep.

Looks like winter has finally decided to arrive! Had to make a run to town & done with that for the wkend. Now: home, relaxing & enjoying my coffee. Area mtns due to get feet of snow, inches along my stretch of the Snake. After coffee, headed down to the river & see what's been out & about.

First snow of Winter finally arrived during the night. 18° this AM, headed to 34° for a hi today. More snow forecast starting tomorrow thru the wkend.

Lows to teens this week with highs into 30s. Forecast snow tonight/tomorrow & again by wk's end. Stocked up on dry firewood in garage. Woodstove is blazing, home is warm. Prepped for Winter, Mother Nature...bring it!

Low last night was 19° & it's warmed to 35° right now. Some ice patches along river's edge. Clear & sunny with a few midges flying. Didn't see any surface strikes by trout tho. Back home now, sitting in front of the fire.

Have family & most importantly, grandkids!, coming for Christmas. Planning adventures & texting back & forth this AM. Newsflash for AI-driven spell check: it most definitely is: Ski Resorts...not Ski "Results" 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️! Lol!

28° in shade headed to hi of 33° today. Just got back home after a walk down to the river. Relaxing on deck in the sun, when Chickadees started giving alarm calls & House Finches flew away in every direction, as a Sharp-shinned Hawk made a missed pass at the finches. Colder temps & snow forecast.

Stepped outside to take quick phone photo of tonight's sunset. Could hear some Trumpeter Swans in flight. Just now checking photos & up hi center sky is a group of 4 blurry Trumpeters. Will use good camera & try to get some good Trumpeter photos. Weather change should start bringing more overhead.

Neighbor came over to do some "touch up" work on the place. Now, that he retired from farming, think he just likes driving & playing with his bulldozer, lol! Area forecast shows a low of 17° tonight. Here along river, always 5° cooler than predicted. Bit of snow forecast, too. About time!

Happy Thanksgiving! Having my AM cup of coffee. 30° out, headed to 42° & light snow forecast tomorrow. Canada Geese, Snow Geese & Trumpeter Swans in neighbor's winter wheat this AM. Relaxing day ahead.

In my area, most boats are jet boats for Salmon & Snake Rivers and use thru Hell's Canyon & others. Best friend who has a jet boat says he has to use min 91 octane for engine warranty & best performance. Costly...but sure is fun!

Can show in one photo how economy is going for folks. Used this photo on Bluesky a few days ago of what I recently paid for gas/gallon. Have yet to see a decrease in prices at gas station, grocery store or other essentials.

Instead of a late Fall day approaching Thanksgiving, yest could have been a Spring day. Both Grand Targhee & Sun Valley (a first in their 90 yr history) report will miss opening of ski season on Thanksgiving Day.

Have found when "really" fly-fishing, I concentrate on the fishing. So, purposely leave good camera, spotting scope, etc home. Otherwise, get too distracted with wildlife. But, had to pause & take a phone photo when a Bald Eagle landed to watch the same seam buddy & I were casting in.

Finally, tied into one of the browns. They were finicky this afternoon & made us work for 'em! Neighbor & I ea landed/released one apiece. Beautiful day, water, sky...Bald Eagles, Trumpeter Swans, Canada Geese.
November 23, 2025 at 11:10 PM
Enjoying AM steaming cup of coffee. Trumpeter Swans are flying overhead & a Sharp-shinned Hawk just jetted thru, scattering House Finches, Chickadees & Flickers in every direction. A relaxing day ahead.

21° with a freezing ground fog this AM. All outside surfaces have frost. Indoors, the woodfire has it warm & cozy. Saw at least a 20" brown trout completely clear water surface yest along a certain riffle on the Snake. It's streamer season! Going to try to entice him, once it warms above freezing.
November 23, 2025 at 2:56 PM
Nice to have a good neighbor! Made quick work of a project I needed done. Retired from farming this yr but kept some essential equip. Then, we walked down to the river & were watching a stretch of water when a 20" brown made a full body leap! He'll be tomorrow's "project" for us!

Guiding neighbor in his Cat & found this narrowleaf cottonwood with oyster mushroom clumps from 20' to 40' high, on the trunk. Tree is prob dead, but where it falls won't be on my perimeter trail. So, just let nature do its thing.
