In July, Bremen, an ally of Denmark, launched an assault on Wampanoag. Fortunately, the defenders had plenty of warning, and well outnumbered the attackers. Even so, their victory was hard won. The technological advantage of the colonizers was apparent, and the war leaders became less confident.

In January 1549, the Federation's question was answered as a new fleet arrived in the far north. Only a small Powhatan settlement lay in the north, but the omens were clear: the Danes were coming, and in significant numbers. The Federation prepared to repel the invaders.

In October of 1548, a fleet, much larger than anything the Federation possessed, appeared on the horizon. Onboard the mighty fleet were presumably an army of Danish soldiers, but oddly, the fleet carried on along the coast, down towards the Gulf of Mexico. Where did they plan to attack?

In May of 1548, the tribal council of the Powhatan Federation decided the threat of the colonizers was too much to risk, and launched an assault against their neighbors. There were no defending soldiers, and occupying the Danish colonies was trivial. However, this would certainly provoke their ire..

The longer the new Powhatan Federation waits to learn the practices of feudalism from their new Danish neighbor, the longer they have to deploy forces to the area. The federation must decide: risk waiting, or attack now, and potentially lose the benefits of adopting feudalism.

Shortly after, the federation consolidated, forming the new Powhatan Federation, which wasn't a wholly new unit itself. Rather, it was formed of the rapidly expanding Powhatan nation, with a few smaller associated tribes, that saw their chance to join with the very successful Powhatan.

In the aftermath of the war, the Powhatan worked to expand their stated borders before the colonizers could get there first. During this expansion, Powhatan's old chief, Kanatsoyh Gweugwehono, passed away, leaving a less capable chief, Opitchapan Weynoak, in his stead.

The war went astonishingly well for Powhatan. In one fell swoop, they managed to not only eliminate Lenape, and open the route to making contact with the Danes, but also annexed Wampanoag, the leader of the federation Powhatan was a member of. This made Powhatan the leader by default.

After 17 years of relative quiet, outside of a new Danish colony in New Jersey, Powhatan attacked north at their neighbors in Lenape. The Danish settlers brought new ideas and technology, and being their neighbors would bring Powhatan an edge.

In mid-1524, the war became hopeless for Susquehannock, who surrendered unconditionally to Powhatan. While the leaders of Powhatan hoped to eliminate Susquehannock as a potential threat, they were unable to do so. Instead, they seized lands further inland and south along the coast of the Carolinas.

With the collapse pf Susquehannock's allies, Powhatan forces began to push into Florida to occupy Ichisi territory, another ally of Susquehannock, and coincidentally, another rival of Powhatan. The war looked to be nearing its end.

The war largely stalled after Pequot's early surrender until June 1523, when a Powhatan army under Kiptopke Nansemond completely destroyed an enemy-allied army. As tribes can only raise men from their centralized lands and they largely only own one province, this turned the war in Powhatan's favor.

In 1521, Powhatan launched a war against the Susquehannock, seeking to expand their power base in the mid-Atlantic. Pequot, Susquehannock's ally, fell quickly, and its lands were split between Powhatan and its allies. Susquehannock, however, has strong allies, and 2 years into the war, still holds.

Powhatan's federation is looking less optimistic. After passing 7 reforms, the leader can consolidate the members into a state, which presents us with a problem: Powhatan aren't the leaders of the federation, and would be absorbed at that point (game over, I think). We need to become the leader.

Only a few years later, and the geopolitical landscape has changed. Powhatan and Iroquois, allies a moment ago, are now rivals after the Iroquois have moved into Virginia. Powhatan have, in the meantime, expanded further into Pennsylvania, as well as growing their colony in Massachusetts.

Powhatan is currently led by Kanatsoyh Gweugwehono, a young chief, at the age of 29. The Iroquois Confederation, newly arrived on the stage, allied with the Iroquois. The Norwegians have colonized part of Newfoundland, and the budding young states realize the threat from the colonizers.

Europa Universalis, 1507. Powhatan is on the rise on the east coast of North America. Norway and Castille have sent exploration ships and have settled nearby. Powhatan has won a recent war against Seneca, taking ground in current day Maryland and Massachusetts. Can they withstand the oncoming storm?
