Aw, snap! This one was painted for his nephew, who went on to found the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It's an utter joy to vist.
Large blossom branches like this against a blue sky were one of Van Gogh’s favourite subjects. Almond trees flower early in the spring making them a symbol of new life. Van Gogh borrowed the subject, the bold outlines and the positioning of the tree in the picture plane from Japanese printmaking. The painting was a gift for his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo, who had just had a baby son, Vincent Willem. In the letter announcing the new arrival, Theo wrote: ‘As we told you, we’ll name him after you, and I’m making the wish that he may be as determined and as courageous as you.’ Unsurprisingly, it was this work that remained closest to the hearts of the Van Gogh family. Vincent Willem went on to found the Van Gogh Museum.

(I was lucky enough to stand before this painting in person; it's huge!) Velasquez, Las Meninas, 1656, Museo de. Prado.
The painting is believed to depict a room in the Royal Alcazar of Madrid during the reign of King Philip IV of Spain, and presents several figures, most identifiable from the Spanish court, captured in a particular moment as if in a snapshot. Some of the figures look out of the canvas towards the viewer, while others interact among themselves. The five-year-old Infanta Margaret Theresa is surrounded by her entourage of maids of honour, chaperone, bodyguard, two dwarves and a dog. Just behind them, Velázquez portrays himself working at a large canvas. Velázquez looks outwards beyond the pictorial space to where a viewer of the painting would stand. In the background there is a mirror that reflects the upper bodies of the king and queen. They appear to be placed outside the picture space in a position similar to that of the viewer, although some scholars have speculated that their image is a reflection from the painting Velázquez is shown working on.

⬆️AMAZING! Monet's Water Lillies (below Nuages, L'Orangerie, Paris) have been horribly reproduced to sell everything from bed linen to towels and children's pencil cases. Seeing them in person is a genuine honour.
Offered to the French State by the painter Claude Monet on the day that followed the Armistice of November 11, 1918 as a symbol for peace, the Water Lilies are installed according to plan at the Orangerie Museum in 1927, a few months after his death. This unique set, a true « Sixtine Chapel of Impressionism » in the words of André Masson in 1952, testifies to Monet’s later work. It was designed as a real environment and crowns the Water Lilies cycle begun nearly thirty years before. The set is one of the largest monumental achievements of early twentieth-century painting.

Woman Writing a Letter is one of the artist’s most outstanding compositions and his most ambitious depiction of the theme of letter writing. While a maidservant gazes out of a window, her mistress writes an epistle. On the floor in the foreground lie a red seal, a stick of sealing wax and an object which is either a letter with a crumpled wrapper or a letter-writing manual, a standard aid for personal correspondence at the time. In either case, the suggestion is that the objects have been discarded by the lady in some agitation.

Sewing the Sail" was painted in 1896 during Sorolla's stay in Valencia. The painting depicts women sewing a large white sail by the sea. The scene takes place in bright sunlight, giving the painting a warm and soothing atmosphere. The artist's vivid colours and impressionistic touch make this scene particularly lively and dynamic.
