In 2021, the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center revealed that Roman Shukhevych, a Ukrainian nationalist who collaborated with the Nazis and was linked to the massacres of Jews and Poles, was one of those being commemorated by the memorial. Only after the Holocaust education group repeatedly raised the matter with Canadian Heritage was Shukhevych’s name removed. In May 2025, it was revealed that the name of another Nazi collaborator was initially engraved on the monument despite warnings to the Department of Canadian Heritage in 2021 that the man participated in the executions of Jews during the Holocaust. The nameplate commemorating Janis Niedra was installed on the memorial in 2023, according to government records released under the Access to Information Act. It was later removed. Research data was provided to the department in 2021 showing that Niedra led a group of 40 men to help the Nazis round up and execute around 350 Latvian Jews. Those killed were women, children and senior citizens. Niedra, who would later go on to serve the Nazis in various positions in Latvia, came to Canada after the war. He died in 1969.

When Trump labeled the press “enemies of the people,” the audience cheered. Trump recognized their scorn. The effect was cathartic: elites mocked them, and now they could mock back. Late-night talk show hosts made fun of them; now they will be fired. Sociologist Arlie Hochschild focused on what she called the “deep story”—her term for the narrative her Louisiana informants used to describe the feeling they had of having patiently waited their turn and following the rules for the American dream, only to see what they claim were undeserving outsiders cutting ahead of them. This was ritualized in Trump’s call-and-response and “Stop the Steal,” persecution reimagined as significance. It was better to be cheated than to be irrelevant. It meant you mattered enough for elites to conspire against you. Scholars Andrew Whitehead and Samuel Perry have observed the same of Christian nationalism: Christians displaced in their own land, ridiculed by secular elites, crave restoration at any cost.

In 107 days, I didn’t have enough time to show how much more I would do to help them than he ever would. And that makes me immensely sad. Every night of those 107 days, my last prayer before sleep was to ask God, Have I done everything I could do today? I don’t know if there was more that I could have done to help those young people know me better, to give me their vote. I do know that I tried.

One contributing factor appears to be the use of incarcerated labor through Alabama's prison work-release program—particularly within auto parts manufacturing, according to the report's authors. A 10% increase in the share of incarcerated workers in a plant is associated with a 10–14% decrease in wages for non-incarcerated ("free") workers. According to the report, evidence suggests this occurs because incarcerated workers, unable to leave over low pay or poor conditions, give employers leverage to suppress wages and standards for all employees.

A boundless hope for itself, it is at the same time a terror for those who reject its law and do not auto matically concur with its principles. In 1949 com munism ceased to be a phantom: It is a state and an army (by far the most powerful on earth), supplemented by an organized move ment and maintained in a monolithic cohesion by a negation of every form of personal interest. And Europe is not alone in being shaken, but Asia as well; despite its military and industrial supe riority, America itself is growing tense, and the indignation it expresses in the name of narrow individualism poorly conceals an exasperated fear. Today the fear of the USSR obsesses and dis heartens the whole noncommunist world. Nothing is resolved, sure of itself, endowed with an uncompromising will to organize, except for the USSR. Essentially, the rest of the world lines up against the latter through inertia: It willingly surrenders to the contradictions that it bears within it; it lives from day to day, blind, rich or poor, depressed, and its speech has become an impotent protest - even a groan.
