It sometimes works? But even then it’s like, “miss, why do we gotta read this?”

I have students that will just put their heads on the desk and refuse to engage. I have other students that get upset they have to learn.

I want to delve into this more but I need to pause and go parent. More soon.

Specific examples of what engagement can look like and why engagement is so important. We do a lot with people like Martin Luther King, the Black Panther movement, stonewall, the labor movement, and other instances where marginalized communities engaged and used their voices.

While it isn’t 💯

Thing that I was originally going to touch upon.

So we have this generation of people that are completely switched off and are not engaging even when they’re scrolling. So you ask them
To engage and they don’t know how to.
Something we’ve been doing with our students to some success is teaching

— what the video is about.”

No one was able to do it.

I asked them to describe the last 5 videos they’d scrolled through. No one could do it. So even though they’re on the phones all the time they’re not actually retaining anything.

This loops back around to the whole “everyone hates to read”

By this is that they’re scrolling and watching TikToks or Insta story’s or before that it was vine and YouTube. Just scroll through the videos, but don’t engage with the videos.

I caught most my class on their phones one day and I was like “okay take the video you’re watching now and tell me

Attention spans. Getting them to engage with a 10 minute short film is incredibly difficult. Want them to read a novel or watch a feature film? Almost impossible.

This isn’t their faults, they’ve been raised on screens and social media. They’re taught to disassociate not to engage. What I mean

Part of this is the fact the US education system is an absolute joke and needs a serious overhaul. Part of this is that kids are taught to do well on standardized tests not taught for retention.

When working w/ people under the age of 25 something I’ve noticed is that they have incredibly short

My students reading and comprehension ranges from kindergarten levels up to 3rd or 4th grade. So even my seniors& GED students can’t read or understand what they’re reading above an elementary level.

Part of this is 100% gaps from COVID lockdowns. Not every student had a parent sitting w/ them.
