I gotta tell ya, all of this grifting in the space programs is making me ultra suspicious of past perfect successes of former space programs that apparently are impossible to replicate. We now possess technology that would seem alien to the 60's+NASA folk, so sci-fi they wouldn't dream it possible.

It is a young person's sport and given the attraction a lot of America's youth have to authoritarian liars on Tik Tok and the like, that doesn't surprise me. Just flowing with the times.

The media is controlled. A drip approach to letting out this information is likely better than a big drop, because a big drop can be steered away right into silence. Drip, drip, drip, drip and it cannot be so easily contained and it sparks renewed interest each time it happens.
