There's a hate movement on one side and people standing in solidarity over humanistic values on the other, and the "both sides" frame means giving cover to hate, and same for trying to downplay the fact that Russian aggression is allowed to continue because of the ties to Western economic interests

It's in no way othering but standing in solidarity with progressive Jewish people, and you're just casually repeating an antisemitic stereotype about Jews being associated with money, so it's kind of clear it's not the positive or civic kind of nationalism that you mean, sorry

We primarily need a robust electoral alternative to right populism, but there's national elections in a year and a realistic chance that Latvia will flip to the Orban/Fico bloc with the same arguments that normalizing with Russia would mean putting our economic interests first

If it was up to me, the sanctions regime wouldn't be basically designed to look like the European leadership is "doing something" to their internal public, and the military support wouldn't have been drip-fed, with the goal to force a fast collapse and then dismantling of the RF

Meanwhile what's actually happening is that there's very strong traction for the idea that Russia only understands force (which is obviously true at this point) and therefore we also need to give up more and more pluralism and just replace it with a security state and blind nationalism

I don't see how the 90s with the lawlessness and state looting that created the oligarchy can be seen as democratic, and Putin was also the West's darling at the start and seen as a modernizer and a technocrat, i.e., someone fit to run a managed democracy, which is the whole problem

Kallas takes a stronger posture but there's limited substance, for example, there's no serious call for accountability for the Western institutions that were laundering money from Russia and were instrumental in allowing it to sink so completely into the arms of a crime family

It is exactly the other way around, the same structural factors why liberal democracy "didn't take root" in Russia are causing democratic crisis the world over, and the basically genetic explanations are dangerous and destabilizing for places like where I'm from with a large Russian minority

The US is placing sanctions on European ICC judges, so it's less that it's becoming something but just on-the-nose gangsterism, and all that the EU has managed is to issue statements but otherwise go along with it, and I very much doubt that it will discover self-respect with leaders like Kallas

Jā, demokrāti zaudēja tāpēc, ka domāja, ka kreisajiem nebūs, kur likties, un viņi tāpat balsos par korporatīvu kampaņu, kas mēģina pievilināt republikāņu balsis ar Dika Čenija meitu kā biežāko viesi uz skatuves, un tas pilnībā izgāzās, un nekādas pašrefleksijas šiem politdarboņiem par to nav
