Scottish Labour has in the past been a great champion of LGBT+ rights. It can be again. Transphobia has no place in the Labour Party. We need to root out the bigotry that is taking hold.

Yesterday that tribunal ruled that Peggie unlawfully harassed Beth Upton.

A Labour government passed the Equality Act. A Labour government was in power when the Supreme Court interpreted it to not mean what ministers at the time were clear it was intended to mean. The Labour government response should have been to legislate to fix it. Not doing so was a cowardly betrayal.

I have some sympathy with the argument that you have to be in the room to change minds, but that glosses over the reality of this PR exercise.

The chair of the ECHR, the statutory body with responsibility to encourage equality and diversity, eliminate unlawful discrimination, and protect and promote human rights, went on Radio 4 this morning and advocated this, except the third door is for trans people and doesn't actually exist.

The idea that a "women's rights group" would find common cause with, would organise events alongside, vocal opponents of abortion rights like the Scottish Family Party would have been laughed at in 2016. It's a reality today, created by an anti-trans moral panic that has subsumed rational thought.

In 2016 there was no For Women Scotland or Sex Matters or LGB Alliance. The word "feminism" actually meant "feminism", and had never yet been used as code for transphobia. Engender, Zero Tolerance, Rape Crisis were all forging new work, not fighting a rearguard action against bigotry. Imagine.
