Three fundamental societal functions are at the heart of it: the reduction of all forms of violence, opportunities for participation in politics and society, and the existence of formal and informal institutions for conflict transformation." Text: "What role does religion play in peacebuilding? Religion has a complex relation with peace. Religious ideas can inspire compassion and collaboration, but they can also justify exclusion and violence. Likewise, religious actors can be perpetrators of violence and powerful advocates for peace. By strengthening religious freedom and countering discrimination, societies signal their engagement for peace. This can also boost the pro-peace forces within religions."
