I love how German news media is talking about Hitler’s #Mikropenis the same time #SouthPark is talking about Trump’s #Tageschau

Other than BBC News and PBS NewsHour, I don’t lean on cable news networks for news, information, and analysis. I was however struck by the @nytimes.com description of @newsnation.bsky.social as a “conservative news network.” I thought that they were aiming to be “centrist”?

Die AfD darf sich verpissen lassen.

And so can JD Vance and Trump for embracing a political movement that includes literal Nazis.

❤️ this graphic from MIT about indirect costs. Conveys that a “high” rate doesn’t mean that a majority of a grant goes to IDC. At large research universities, it’s about 25-30% of total costs. I have to explain this to researchers all the time: web.mit.edu/fnl/volume/2...

This was all foretold in #Project2025 (see page 355) because DEI bad, universities “too woke” static.project2025.org/2025_Mandate...

For an administration that wants to deregulate, it would prudent that they would look to remove some of the administrative burdens imposed on grant recipients (see this graphic from the Council on Governmental Relations - COGR). Also this list: www.cogr.edu/sites/defaul...

Many foundations recognize universities have specialized labs + specialized oversight obligations…in the past few years, they’ve been increasing rates. This post by the Ford Foundation addresses the “overhead fiction” of not covering the real costs of a project www.fordfoundation.org/news-and-sto...

Foundations often don’t use an MTDC base, but a “Total Direct Cost” (TDC). You apply a rate to all our your direct costs to calculate indirect costs. NIH is being a bit misleading when they cote lower foundation rates…some of these sponsors let us charge directs cost that the feds don’t allow.
February 8, 2025 at 9:42 AM
Under 2 CFR 200, universities used a “Modified Total Direct Cost” (MTDC) base, meaning when you multiple the rate to your base to calculate your IDC recover, there are quite a few direct costs excluded from the base. www.ecfr.gov/current/titl... #IDCMatters

Visual from COGR (Council on Governmental Relations), tracking federal regulations + policies that impact how contacts & grants are managed. In my over 20 years in the #researchadministration biz, I can attest that the complexity of these requirements has grown tremendously #idcmatters #scipol

Oh, it’s complicated…but easier than the alternative of accounting these costs on a project-by-project basis. I always remind folks that we calculate IDC using a formula. It’s only done as an allocation of Total Costs with a handful on foundations/non-profits. Here’s a great visual from COGR.

We spent a decade making progress with the Obama, Trump 1.0, and Biden admins to ensure research is funded based on real costs—including indirect costs per 2 CFR 200. This policy is a shakedown. The fools behind it don’t understand accounting, or how our R&D ecosystem works.
February 8, 2025 at 1:51 AM
But 2 CFR 200 gives science agencies the ability to limit IDC on a “class of awards” with agency head approval. That’s what was cited in the notice today.

Being kind & supporting ALL students isn’t “indoctrination”—it’s basic humanity. Trump’s exec orders targeting trans kids are cruel. As a parent & Castro Valley school board trustee, I believe in loving kids unconditionally, no matter their identity. #TransIsBeautiful #LoveIsLove #BeTheLight 🏳️‍⚧️
