Jimmy Cliff was a legend. If you have found your way to the world of ska, and are not familiar with the significance that artists like Jimmy Cliff played in ska, rocksteady, and reggae… pay your respects. Give a listen. His impact on not only ska, reggae, and pop music in general was profound

I covered this song on bothered / unbothered because its message rang true, and as an artist who pulls influence from many avenues like punk, hardcore, Midwest emo, and hip-hop, I wanted to pay a little tribute to the roots of the style that anchors me with this one

Reggae then came from ska’s successor of rocksteady, but was a style that came with a conscious belief in social change and unity. The unity wasn’t farce, and understood the necessary work of liberation from the colonial empire to achieve true peace and unity.

The song also had such a profound message to it to, that fit both the theme of my first record Bothered / Unbothered, as well as my overall message of liberation. Ska was a genre born out of newfound Jamaican independence and liberation.
