Als je het in die termen wilt uitdrukken, is de werkelijkheid eerder dat Suriname van Nederland “af wilde”. De nationalistische beweging was er sterk en vond het Statuut van 1954 (interne autonomie) niet ver genoeg gaan. Nederland rekte de boel, tot het aantreden van het kabinet-Den Uyl.
