A once keen birder and temporary Fair Isle resident in a previous life. Now just mostly obsessed with moths (Staffordshire VC39). Update Ordnance Survey data for a living.
Not as pretty as the macros, but some significant micro records from the garden this year.

Cadra figulilella (Raisin Moth) and Phycitodes saxicola (Lesser Clouded Knot-horn) both new for VC39, with at least four specimens of the latter recorded & confirmed by gen det.

And a few more of the macro NFGs from the garden this year, here in North Staffordshire.
A few details in ALT text.

It’s freezing cold & I’m bored. So here’s a selection of the 34 macro NFGs from this year’s efforts in the garden. A few details in ALT text.
Micros to follow in a separate post!

A total of 95 NFGs pushed the garden total up to 603. A pretty crazy year all round.

Howdi Rob

Sorry not the best photos or example, but thought this looked a reasonable shout for Phyllonorycter schreberella?
Definitely on Elm (asymmetric leaf base).
Upper and underside shots of the mine.

Thanks

Sounds like things are happening for you, probably because you’re not sat under this shite 😂🤦‍♂️

Some leaf mine finds from today.
Ectoedemia argyropeza and Stigmella assimilella on Aspen.
Ectoedemia initimella on Sallow.
All new for SJ84 this autumn, and from several different sites now.

Sorry Rob, just one more for you!

Is this any good for Ectoedemia intimella on a Sallow of some description, I think!?!

Thanks again.

Hi Rob

Very interested to see what you think of the mine on the right hand leaf in the first photo (and in the subsequent 3 photos).

Have I found Ectoedemia turbidella???!!!

Thanks

Went out this morning targeting Aspen, and pleased to find Ectoedemia argyropeza. Loads of them!
Very easy to spot at the moment.

New for SJ84 and another one I’ve clawed back on the prolific Mr @pertonmoths.bsky.social 😅😅

Today I found another site for Phyllonorycter pastorella - this time in the heart of Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre!
They were on a large White Willow (I think) at the back of the Aldi carpark 😆😅

Afternoon Rob

Do these look OK for Stigmella obliquella on (I think) White Willow?
Another new one for the SJ84 list if so 🙂
Cheers

Just 15:7 from last night, with 5 Ruddy Streak the most numerous species.
Mottled Umber NFY, Barred Sallow and Brick the best of the rest.
Try again tonight…😑

And just a couple of others from today, for you Rob!
Perhaps Stigmella obliquella on Willow sp. and Stigmella assimillela on Aspen.
Many thanks.

Hi again Rob!

Another possible Stigmella speciosa for your adjudication 😅
I’m not totally convinced myself either, but looks like someone is at home in this one!!
Cheers

Howdi Rob - I think this could be an old Stigmella speciosa mine on Sycamore?

Thanks

A bracing walk along the cliffs this morning, Scalby to Cromer Point.
6 Whooper Swan fresh in, continued north just inland of Long Nab @longnabbirder.bsky.social

😂
Do you even know where SJ84 is?!

As I’m a lovely & helpful chap, I’ve marked it up for you with my big chunky red pen. Complete with a (albeit old) scoticella record!

No need to thank me 😆😆😉😉😁

Here’s mine from this year, aptly demonstrating the variability!
October 21, 2025 at 4:36 PM
Was looking grim this morning, with nothing at all in the main trap. But the little 40w trap nearby came up trumps with NFG White-point!
Also NFY Acleris sparsana. Yet another Dark Sword-grass was the only other notable from just 8:7!!
It’s going to come down to the wire, but 500 is on.

Just 14:10 from last night, but with NFY Feathered Thorn (x2) bringing me a step closer to 500 for the garden year list.

As far as I can see here, there are records of PU from all of the Yorkshire VCs.
Still a nice record though 👍

Rubber stamped by BirdGuides now too. It’s official 😅
October 18, 2025 at 7:59 AM
Wahey! Thank you 😀 Looks like a good one for Staffs too.
@pertonmoths.bsky.social will be delighted to learn that I’ve found another ‘New for SJ84’ leafminer 🤣
October 17, 2025 at 3:05 PM
Hi Rob - I’m not totally convinced with this one, but a plausible shout for Stigmella assimilella on Aspen?!

Thanks

A better shot of last night’s Vapourer.
Only my second, with the first back in 2022.
Garden year list now on 488, probably going to fall agonisingly short of 500…
