As a journalist, it's been difficult to make sense of the rapid changes we're all living through. But in comics, you have two channels juxtaposed: words can reinforce images or contradict them. Sometimes it's easier to express the absurdity and tragedy of authoritarianism through juxtaposition. 3/

She was extraordinary, and extraordinarily generous. Alice Wong: I am so grateful to have been alive in her lifetime. She was one of our species' best. She deserved better. My her legacy be for a blessing.

The Grandeur That Was Rome
Panel 1: I was sobbing at the ruins of the Roman Forum. This has been happening to me more and more often: I see something ancient, I start boohooing. Panel 2: My poor 84-yr-old dad didn't know quite what to do with me. Panel 3: It was the bricks that did it. Somoene had to make them one by one in the hot sun and go home anbd argue with their parents or have sex with their wife or boyfriend or whatever it was that seemed so important and when they died they left a hole the size of the world in the world Panel 4: And the bricks were still there. Which meant the hole was still there. Sometimes I have a problem with time. Panel 1: me and my dad on a stone bench. me: Sorry. I guess I've always been like this? remember how weird I was when I was little? dad: I remember you having a temper when you were little. me: ...I used to tear books apart. dad: You had a temper about things you didn't umderstand. Panel 2: dad: But you know what do remember from when you were a little girl? Do you remember the time we were on that airplane-- Panel 3: me: Oh god I remember that. I mean I actually remember it, from my point of view, not just from being told the story. dad: We were landing and they said over the loudspeaker that you could ask the pilot if you had any questions -- and you said, can I ask them -- me: "HOW DID THE UNIVERSE BEGIN?" dad: "How did the Universe begin." Panel 1: from behind, silhouettes, looking out at tourists milling in front of the Colosseum: me: I definitely remember I was trying to be cute. Like, it was a bit. dad: But you did think about that kind of thing all the time. me: Yeah, I actually really did want to know how the Universe began. -end for now-

it's a ring now
my hand (white, middle-aged) with a pretty big ring on the first finger. It's part of a turquoise-blue glass Nueva Cadiz bead I found last week on the beach, dating to 1500-1550ish. Set very simply in sterling silver, it;s about as long as the space between my hand-knuckle and lowest finger-knuckle.
