I like to play neat video games and dabble in some garbage beginner ice hockey. He/Him. https://kind.social/@SirChadlyOC
@polykillpodcast.bsky.social My niece got to experience her first ever CRT gaming experience today. She loved Super Mario Bros, she thought Bubble Bobble was just OK, but she helped me #JustBeatIt on her first ever TMNT game, Turtles in Time. Fellas, we created a beat-em-up fan! Cowabunga out of 5.

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustbeatIt Wildfrost has gotta be the hardest roguelike deck builder I’ve ever played. Unfortunately, its difficulty makes it inaccessible to all but the true sickos, but it has fun turn-based mechanics like moving fighters around two battle lanes. Easy mode please! 4/5

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social Shogun Showdown is a puzzle-like roguelike deck builder with combat that kinda feels like dancing? Or chess? …No, boxing! You’re constantly hopping in and out of enemy range, jabbing, then floating away like a butterfly. #JustBeatIt, but there’s more to explore here. 4/5

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Defender’s Quest 2 really grew on me. Sure, it’s not as good as the first, but it’s still a great character-building tower defense game. It’s a miracle this game came out after a 12-year development hell, and it deserves respect for what it accomplishes. 4/5

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Westerado: Double Barreled is a great introduction to sandbox RPGs like Fallout or Skyrim where you have the freedom to do or kill whatever you want but without the 60-hr time commitment. The genre isn’t for me, but it’s a neat little spaghetti western! 7/10

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Defender’s Quest, a top-10 all time game, is a 2012 indie Tower Defense RPG that miraculously just released a sequel against all odds. I could spend a whole @indiequestpod.com episode explaining all the aspects that make it so good, but it’s a triumph. 💎 5/5

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt on stream, DuckTales 2 improves upon the first game's excellent gameplay by fixing the pogo mechanics. The difficulty is more balanced with more interesting bosses and easier stages, though the castle in Scotland may be the hardest stage in the series. 8.5/10

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt DuckTales is the first of many licensed action platforming bangers that Capcom would become known for. The innovative uses of Scrooge McDuck’s cane keeps the action fresh and interesting. Multiple stages, secrets, and endings keep the replay value high. 4/5

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Mega Man 2 remains one of the all time best action platformers, especially in 1989. There’s so many memorable moments like dodging Quick Man stage’s lasers, one-shotting Metal Man with his own blade, and realizing that only Bubble Lead can beat Dr. Wily. 9/10

Welp, another really challenging day. All I could think about is listening again to the Super Mario Land track that plays during stages 2-1 and 2-2 because it slaps. Some platforming fails this time may have been caused by input lag via Nintendo Switch’s GameBoy app. Maybe tomorrow will be better. 💜

I got lots of bad news today. Instinctively I grabbed my DMG-01 from the shelf, inserted Super Mario Land, and crushed it again. Damn those chirpy tunes from that bitty speaker get me every time. ♥️

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Super Mario Land 🎶“Way back in the day
All you had were three-frame LCD games.
Our journeys had a lack
Of all but travel Scrabble packs!
Yes, NES looked best,
But to put this one next game in context:
It was a milestone year,
Handheld gaming started here!”🎶

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social Childhood redempsh cleared, FINALLY, with a #JustBeatIt on my first encounter with Jank: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES, 1989). Yesbunga. This game is so cool except for all the parts that aren’t. I love it despite the sack full of flaws. 3/5, had the life of my time.
February 24, 2025 at 2:35 AM
@polykillpodcast.bsky.social I abused rewind on the Switch, but I managed to #JustBeatIt Ninja Gaiden (NES, 1989). I’m not a hardcore gamer, so I appreciate using modern tools to fully experience the game. Thanks to unlimited continues, it’s not TOO BAD except for knockback and the final boss. 7/10

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Tape to Tape asks, what if NHL 94 was a roguelite? This indie game nails the solid hockey gameplay and adds roguelite elements like earning new artifacts and talents to improve your run, unlocking new players and power ups, and buying permanent upgrades. 9/10
February 22, 2025 at 11:14 PM
@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt The Three Stooges (NES, 1989) is objectively bad, but I enjoy it regardless. I finally got the good ending, raising $20K in 30 days to save the orphanage and marry 3 daughters by abusing endless soup competitions at the Oyster and Cracker bar. 2/5, good soup.

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Leap Year is the perfect cozy puzzle platformer for a dreary February that feels like it’ll never end. The basic premise, that your jump is higher than the game’s fall damage permits, surprisingly has a lot of potential for an engaging world. 4/5, Main Quest.
February 19, 2025 at 3:31 PM
@polykillpodcast.bsky.social I heard on the school playground that if you don’t get a #JustBeatIt on Batography this cycle, you’ll get kicked out of the Discord? Is that true?? Not worth the risk, I don’t want everyone to make fun of me. Wait, everyone already moved on to a different game?! Dang 3/5
February 14, 2025 at 12:53 PM
@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Final Fight (arcade) is a dang good beat-em-up. Seeing food and weapon pickups, plus visible enemy health bars would have changed my life forever back in 1989. It’s tough like all quarter-munching brawlers, but it’s not as cheap or unfair as most. 9/10.
February 14, 2025 at 12:31 AM
@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Sayonara Wild Hearts is a thrilling visual and aural explosion that plays like a dream. I enjoyed the experience a lot, but as a rhythm game, I found it underwhelming. I never felt like I was any good at it and couldn’t enter that essential Flow State. 8/10
February 1, 2025 at 8:55 PM
@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt This is difficult for me to admit, but… Kirby’s Adventure is actually kinda hard. The series is known as “baby games for babies” but not in 1993. This is easily a top-10 NES game that plays a bit like Super Mario Bros 3 but with interesting boss battles. 9/10
January 30, 2025 at 3:08 AM
@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Beetle Adventure Racing features long, exciting tracks that somehow aren’t hampered by N64 draw distance fog. After learning how to use brakes correctly, I felt myself enter a flow state as I blasted through turns to climb from 8th to 1st. Gem! 💎 9/10
January 28, 2025 at 10:03 PM
@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt I’m glad @cartridgeclub.bsky.social coerced me to play Shining Force because it’s very good! The story feels like Dragon Quest and features cool characters with unique growths. Smart tactics are needed to defeat the evil plan to resurrect Dark Dragon. 9/10
January 28, 2025 at 9:31 PM
@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt (Nintendo Switch) Florence is a cute hour-long glimpse into a young woman’s quest to find her place in life. The story is told through many different mediums, but I found the usage of color to be the most affective (spelling intentional). Give it a shot! 4/5
January 11, 2025 at 7:37 PM
@polykillpodcast.bsky.social Qix is a great arcade game with a fun concept that’s easy to play and understand. Runs are short, and most mistakes feel avoidable. Score chasing is so addictive that I kept playing after last episode’s beat skeet. I #JustBeatIt 5 more times for the Bingo Beat square!
