Adult caught and ringed in the Firs in June of last year. We caught adult male and female in breeding condition both in the same session:

A very quiet slow bird ringing session suddenly became a good fun session. We were showing a nice, interested family of four some Robins, how to hold and release them safely when this arrived in the net nearest us:

I was cleaning green slime and some sludge out of my pond this morning when this came up in the net. It was huge: it could eat my Smooth Newts as a snack! I am presuming female Great Crested Newt: looked either pregnant with eggs or copying me!

Don't get me wrong, I am lucky to work with a number of really good farmers, part of the @nffn.bsky.social, doing their bit to support local wildlife. Despite being lowland, surrounded by pheasant shoots, we have two farms where both Curlew & Lapwing are breeding successfully:
