One of the obvious consequences of more trials decided by judges is far more appeals resulting from judgments and reasons, which juries do not have to provide. This may or may not be a good thing, but it will drastically slow the system down.

While obviously Lammy's proposal of scrapping many jury trials is getting the headlines, it seems odd how little attention his proposal to scrap the automatic right to appeal is getting. That seems like quite a big thing to be honest, especially for poorer and more marginalised defendants. #r4today

In London, out of 145 total, 107 have Judges, 18 have recorders, and 20 courtrooms are not sitting. In the Midlands, out of 76 total, 60 have Judges, 5 have recorders, and 11 courtrooms are not sitting. In the North East, out of 62 total, 52 have Judges, 7 have recorders, and 3 courtrooms are not sitting. In the North West, out of 69 total, 59 have Judges, 4 have recorders, and 6 courtrooms are not sitting. In the South East, out of 90 total, 73 have Judges, 8 have recorders, and 9 courtrooms are not sitting. In Wales, out of 23 total, 21 have Judges, 1 have recorders, and 1 courtrooms are not sitting.
