NYT has acted in egregious bad faith covering these shakedowns from day one. As in so many other things.

I’ll admit to sometimes forgetting the figures myself (at first) during review. Truly a relic from when main text, tables, and figures all entered separate production editorial workflows.

In fact, the journal is called “Scientific Reports,” which I should’ve been clearer on myself.

Nature =/= Nature Scientific Reports. The latter is a largely fine high-volume transdisciplinary churn of mid science, but it is emphatically not the flagship.

It is fundamentally appealing to the very lazy minds of the “elite.” To recognize the humanity of the downtrodden is to feel the prickly, discomfiting stirrings of a moral duty; to tag them as subhuman relieves you of any noblesse oblige that might’ve attached to your station, traditionally.

Me too. And I’m a postdoc.

Meanwhile this author has contentedly plopped this pub on their CV, where it will be brute-force counted toward hiring and promotion. Reason #9,871 I’m sick of running in the ECR hamster wheel in good faith.

Mine too.

My wife and I both love Zahler and cosmic horror and you may have just made our year.

I am generally (inaccurately) considered a hypist on this site because I do applied AI/ML stuff as a scientist. But I 100% agree. I _wish_ all of the “ocean-boiling lie machine” energy was focused on morally obliterating image and video gen, which have few legit (and zero compelling) use cases.

I have several local LLMs running on a shabby 2019 Windows laptop. Their capabilities are extraordinary and they are 100% free to me, the end user. They’re going nowhere.

Yeah ok I definitely had one of those kicking around. Fortunate this was ~2010 so I either was too scared to try it (likely) or don’t remember when I did.

No you’re totally good lol! Just gave me a flashback or two.

I was lucky to have a friend send me some approachable makeup videos very early on but I’ll admit I made a few furtive drugstore purchases around that time.

Ouch lol.

Flashbacks to endless SO/GI harmonization committee meetings.

iirc the “Two-Step” rationale is to ascertain estimates of trans people who identify as “woman” vs “trans woman” (etc.) but for the reasons you mention, I dislike it. It also permits the simple deletion of the “gender” variable for ideological reasons - as we’re seeing with federal data in the U.S.

Gin is filth. True vodka is complex and ethereal but rare over here.

You are describing a mechanism of action, sure, but I would encourage extreme caution with sweeping “a lot of trans women”-style rhetoric, particularly when your sampling universe is Bluesky.
