I'm suspecting it's because I restricted TG's access to my phone contacts, given that it popped up a message about that when I opened it on my phone recently. Fortunately I don't care enough to bother as I don't really use TG there much.

my experience is generally that furry fediverse can do humor fine, it's once it escapes containment into programmer fediverse that you run into problems
