It is very possible it used to have a different meaning before https was standard and E2EE messengers became a thing. I don't recall ever seeing it used that way though, and I'm not sure I can be considered young anymore.

And I don't think it's obvious that this would be sending the data to them, or that they could decrypt it. Apple Health provides me plenty of insight base on data collected from my Apple Watch without any of that data ever being viewable by Apple.

I agree that one end of an E2EE connection can be a company. But I think it's at a minimum misleading to call it E2EE when that end is always the service provider itself.

Ars did a really great, detailed write-up as well. It points out that Kohler Health's competitor Throne claims "bank-grade encryption", which I assume means they're using the state of the art from 1998.
