I still have the Berlitz tapes I bought years ago to learn German--might been inspired now to get them out and practice. I had several years of French in high school and then took some evening classes in my 20s, but of course, when you have no one at home to talk to, you lose it.

Yes, a lot of them are similar Latin-based. And German is more similar to English. I bought the Berlitz tapes years ago because I wanted to impress my grandma by speaking her first language, but she died before I could get the hang of it!
