My mother was born around the same time. Her father never spoke te reo at home, as her mother forbade it. Consequently, we lost our reo. Her father was a little sneaky, though, and there are a couple of words my mother has always used (apōpō and taihoa) without realising their origin.

I got my first "whaea" when visiting a marae in South Waikato. All I could think is nooooooo I'm not old enough! I'd only ever heard the aunties be called whaea before. But, if I'm one of the aunties now, I reckon that's pretty cool.
