There could be some more downtime today while I change cloudflared config, but it should be brief if so.

Fedi instance will be down for a little while since I want to overhaul it, unrelated to the infrastructure migration!

All the memory I have looked at seems to paint a similar picture - Costing roughly double what it used to be even just a week or two ago.

...at least DDR5 is actually slightly cheaper than DDR4 now, even though both are prohibitively expensive right now.

Currently my server has 64GB of RAM and sits basically at 100% utilization at all times, it's ready to OOM at any given moment. Originally I was planning to upgrade to 128GB (4x32GB) which would cost around £140. Not cheap, but also not bad. That would now cost over £300.

The memory DIMMs in my server currently cost me £71 (DDR5-4800, 32GB per DIMM) back when I built the thing. Now that same memory module costs £150.

So I will in fact not be upgrading the memory in any system for a little while it looks like.

Memory chip manufacturers are prioritizing the faster memory you get on GPUs (And maybe some NPUs, no idea how many dedicated NPU cards are out there) meaning they can't produce enough traditional DDR4/DDR5.

I might do it Thursday! Not wednesday (One again suffering from the lack of an edit feature on bluesky 😭)

Hopefully my changes to the network routing should improve network performance a little bit, but there's only so much I can do with its network connection

The case is supposed to arrive on Tuesday but due to work, I may put it off till the weekend or do it on Wednesday. If things are down sometime this week, it's probably that!

Unfortunately Microsoft is kinda the only one making decent ones.

Some do exist from other companies but they're usually ARM based or have a cheap intel CPU that is similar to my current Microsoft surface pro 5 I repaired

To be clear, I'm not trying to call for hate on framework or anything.
What they're doing is unacceptable, but either way, it'd be nice to see competition

I both really want one but am tempted to build my own thing.

They're such awesome little devices, but a hefty price tag and it's not something I could really build myself to cut down the cost - One of the big things I'm liking about it is the low memory latency/high speed (even if soldered)

Perhaps this is something I will go forwards with. I have a critical bug to fix within Astra API first which I should fix before starting any new projects.
It's something I will continue to think about, however.

And out of these examples, only one of them is decentralized.

I feel that decentralized social platforms are definitely the way forwards after Elon bought out twitter and turned it into his own political project.

If a platform can survive being bought out by a hostile party, that's a good sign.
