It's the inventory label. They used to sew them onto the object. This is better than some where they wrote the inventory number directly on the object.

Also to be fair, we don't have much nalbinding at all in Scandinavia in the Viking Age. It becomes prevelant after the Viking Age. Whereas it's much more prevelant in Egypt running from the Ptolemaic through the 12th century CE.
