The cool thing about keeping a workout log is being able to look back and see how much you lifted 5 years ago... 💪

The sad thing about keeping a workout log is being able to look back and see how much you lifted 5 years ago [compared to now]... 😭

6. Compliance Requirements --

You should be protecting your users' data anyway, but if you work in regulated industries, the various compliance frameworks add another layer of complexity to your systems/processes.

5. Deployment Targets --

In addition to how you are deploying your application(s), where you are deploying your applications matters too.

Moving from a single cloud to multiple clouds or a hybrid cloud/on-prem setup will increase complexity significantly!

4. Deployment Models --

Each deployment model (serverless, VMs, Kubernetes, managed containers) requires patterns, automation, and monitoring. If you can pick one and stick with it, your life will be much easier.

3. Databases --

Each database type you use will require: provisioning, monitoring, backup/restore, and expertise for operating/tuning.

The longer you can get away with a single database, the better off you will be!

2. Languages --

When you operate within a single programming language, you can leverage all of the tooling/ecosystem built up for that language. As you move to two+ languages, you now need to establish patterns for working with each language and add tooling that supports them!

There are 6 primary dimensions of complexity in these types of systems:

1. Users --

If only one person builds/uses a system, they can make many simplifying assumptions about approaching problems. As more people need to interact with a system, the more robust it needs to be!

What causes DevOps complexity?

Why do software systems devolve into a world of pain and toil?

It is due to a topic I have named...

The DevOps Chasm! 🧵

I usually treat all sources of income the same. Paycheck, bonus, cash back, its all going to the same place so why think about it any differently?

That being said, unprompted tips for my content... those hit different! 🫶 🥹

Did you know you can get logs for all pods within a Deployment/DaemonSet/StatefulSet with a single command?!

kubectl logs -l key=value --prefix=true

This will get the logs AND prefix them with the pod name!

Aeron for $400 on FB marketplace one town over… should I get it?! 🤔

Currently have a Steelcase leap v1 which I like, but everyone raves about the HM Aeron!
