The 333 metre very large crude carrier Marinera, formerly the Bella 1 and now registered in Russia, is passing west of Shetland, possibly diverting to between Faroe and Iceland, escorted by Russian navy vessels, heading for Murmansk.

Just had problems in registering UK Gov One Login, freezing at confirming required new password. We have now pinned this down with issues with certain OS, some no older than a year, so something for the coders to debug. Final scream was reserved for the CH site crashing on payment!

The wintry weather debate continues on what qualifies as a blizzard. Officially a blizzard is a driving snow-storm which lasts at least three hours, during which wind is always above 30 knots, visibility is never greater than 400 metres and temperature is always lower than -7 degrees (Celsius).

The coastguard helicopter based at Stornoway, known as Rescue 948, travelled almost 200 nautical miles to the Clair Ridge platform, 30 nautical miles north-west of Eshaness, to take a platform worker in need of medical attention to Sumburgh, then it went back to Stornoway, total 450 nautical miles.

According to British Geological Survey more than 300 earthquakes were recorded in United Kingdom this year, with over two days to come. Four sub-sea earthquakes were recorded near Shetland during the year, the most powerful in November of a magnitude of 3.2 at 85 nautical south-east of Sumburgh.

US firm CB&I completed a strategic acquisition of the holding company Petrofac Asset Solutions, currently in administration. There is a widespread view that Petrofac never quite recovered from losses of around £284 million from building the Shetland Gas Plant by the time it was completed in 2016.

Although there are no more Santa flights on Christmas eve by the coastguard helicopter based at Sumburgh, last year being the last time, the Lerwick lifeboat has again undertaken its annual Christmas tree and star GPS exercise south of Lerwick, from off Trebister Ness to off Fladdabister.

Hannah Mary Goodlad, the SNP candidate for Shetland in the Scottish parliament election in May, has said she is prepared to go against party proposals when Shetland’s interests are at stake. This came as Ms Goodlad condemned the obligation for pelagic fishermen to land more quota at Scottish ports.
