Hot off the press! Our latest paper led by @fernpizza.bsky.social, understanding how plasmids evolve inside cells. These small, self-replicating DNA circles live inside bacteria and carry antibiotic resistance genes, but also compete with one another to replicate. 1/

Intracellular competition shapes plasmid population dynamics
From populations of multicellular organisms to selfish genetic elements, conflicts between levels of biological organization are central to evolution. Plasmids are extrachromosomal, self-replicating g...

Ironically, this graph has no distribution to perform such statistical analysis on 😅

It's so exciting to start a new research lab until you realize that science is expensive and your budget ran out after installing the benches 😅

Any junior PIs out there who can relate?

Science is hard. Often the success rate of anything we try is only 10%, not unlike some of the toughest games out there!

But it's all worth it, since every little success gets us closer to the next level (of knowledge and technology)

A PhD is an amazing opportunity but it's also really tough, especially in the final years.

If you're planning to start one or have started one, be prepared for an emotional roller coaster.

Anyone out here with a doctorate who hasn't experienced this?

And it was all in DIY mode - Make your own Vegan Caviar and button batteries. We even had an astronaut try them out!
