We think that suicides reflect extreme states-of-mind, & events triggering their timing is unpredictable. We show that they are sensitive to seasonal allergies which are relatively minor & easy to treat. Seasonal allergies are very common & we underestimate their impact on our ability to function./N

Suicides and pollen co-vary seasonally. But is it causal? We use a simple daily variation estimation techniques, saturated with fixed effects to remove seasonal and location effects. We show that when pollen is in 4th quartile, there are 7.4% more suicides. Why does this matter?/2

Thanks, Christoph. Our book Economics of Health & Health Care is in 9th edition & has been widely used for upper undergrad & Masters. It combines some theory underpinnings w/ summary of research findings. With 24 chapters, it’s intended to comprehensive though topics are updated in each edition.
