#ActuallyAutistic. Hobbyist composer with sensory hypersensitivity who sometimes writes accordingly and sometimes feels too anxious to write the sounds that don't set this off. He/him

Came here to say that it absolutely has one banger at least. I can believe that "Straight Outta Compton" has at least four, and that it should win, but "I Won't Back Down" is an all-timer. In particular, an all-timer of a crowd chant youtu.be/NEAY1iPgAcY?...

And the result for us here is a night of fireworks that starts as early as 5pm if not sooner... Last night was absolutely exhausting 😭 #BatuallyAutistic

I have seen it described as "the best ad that Pepsi never paid for" 😂

And it may not even be the *second*-worst "new words to an old tune" #1 of the 90s! (Because "Come On You Reds" and "The Millennium Prayer" exist, as much as one might wish they did not.)

In fairness to "This Girl" it has seemingly stuck around - if only in the role of what Americans call a jock jam - better than any of the 2016 bunnies. Ditto JT ofc

Even by 2020s megabunny standards this was shockingly easy to avoid for a ten-weeker, and I'm not qwhite sure why
(I do wonder if the bro flow - D*ddy namedrop and all! - will age horrendously, but as a sex-averse white dude I'm very not the target audience here and technically it's excellent)

Have to say I'm slightly blindsided by the choice of song this time around, and not at all in a bad way - but it's unnerving me that "Where Love Lives" is older now than "Are You Ready for Love" was when it rode an advert to bunnydom

The whole concept of "beauty" and "sexy" seems... Weird to me, but then me is an ace-spectrum autistic with all kinds of confounding sensory issues so my confusion is on a different axis to yours and my brain mostly tends to go to "ooh, shiny" and/or "...hug me?" 😂

Yeah this entire list is basically very solid with even most of the lowlights having obvious "I can see the kid appeal here" earworm power. The only true multiyear lulls for me (early 90s, early 10s) are followed by arguably the peaks of the whole list (TLC/Coolio, 1D)

I'd zoom in on the mid-2010s specifically here - LMFAO and Sheeran are not great (though I can at least see how the very silly former would be a Kids Choice) but everything in between is solid or better (much better in the case of "What Makes You Beautiful")

*bat hugs!*
Piercing high sounds are especially the worst for me, but multiple competing sound sources also very bad. Which is why my wedding reception cabaret had a "flap, don't clap" rule for applause! 💖

(One of my collaborative partners is a cellist, with their own sensory sensitivities; they share my preference for low frequencies and pick cellos, and I assume bows, based on their desire for rich warm lows and non-piercing highs)

As a vocal composer without an instrumental background (dyspraxia and hyperacusis are pretty big barriers to entry 😂) I find this fascinating as my brain always defaults to "instruments are vaguely interchangeable" even when they very aren't, I just don't understand the ways they aren't?

It's weird that BA would sponsor the podcast in the first place if they actually cared about a political neutrality stance, given his history of being that curious and that prepared to interview absolutely anyone
