yeah this feels like something where it would make more sense for heroic to let you do the thing bottles does where you can generate a prefix as it's own completely separate step first to make it less weird if you need to copy a bunch of stuff directly into prefix's directory structure or whatever

my best guess would be heroic doing something with sandboxing where doing that set of steps gets the sandbox set up properly

like if you're installed through flatpak or something, and it needs you to do this to get everything into a directory the flatpak permissions are set to allow access to

a prefix is more or less like a c: drive, so every prefix is kind of like it's own install of windows, with its own installed programs, it's own registry, and config, etc.

no idea what heroic (or that game specifically) is doing that would require that set of steps though, that's real weird

are you playing with the unofficial 1.3 patch? when i tried it awhile ago i did that and this was also my takeaway but i understand it changes some things with the sidekicks that makes them less annoying than they were in the base game
