Point took a bite of her curry and chewed on it. Teio let her think. “You know how hard I've been training recently,” Point said. “Partner running, extra weight lifting, morning jogs. But I’m not seeing any improvement. My times are flatlining.” “You did have to recover from that hamstring pull during the first half of May,” Teio said. “That probably slowed things down.” “But I can't slow down.” Point clenched her fists. “I'm not doing good enough. Not if I want to run in graded races. And I don't have time to struggle through things if I want to win in the fall. So I need more than just what I’ve been doing up until now. And, even if I don’t like to admit it… I need you.” The frustration seething in Point’s voice felt dangerous to Teio. Still, she’d made a promise with her, and she wasn’t going to break it. “I won’t go easy on you, alright?” “I don’t want you to.”

The Mejiro estate’s botanical garden was quiet. Yes, Tokai Point could hear the hree of the crickets and the unsteady whispering of dragonfly wings, but no other humans were there, and the flowers didn’t speak, either. The lotus blossoms floating in the pond at her feet knew what they were and what they would become, and they would grow into perfect form, as certain as the sun that fed them. Point sat on a bench in the center of the garden, holding an ice pack to her thigh. She’d pushed herself too hard running from the subway to the Hiramatsu Blossom, and now her hamstrings were throbbing as badly as they had when she’d first pulled them. She’d probably need another few days to recover now, although that regret barely registered compared to everything else. She had spent at least an hour sitting there in the garden, and the evening had decayed into a moonless twilight by then. She knew she needed an early rest so she could take the train to school in the morning. But she didn’t move.

“I apologize for making you wait,” Symboli Rudolf said as she took a seat at her desk. “The deans were having a meeting about the plans for summer camp this year, and their discussions always run long.” “It’s alright,” Teio said. “I’ve been spending a lot of time alone with my thoughts recently, anyway. A few more minutes can’t hurt.” “Mm.” “Prez” had aged like a redwood, with thick and healthy hair and features as handsome as ever. She had graduated from the academy a year before Teio, but had accepted a position as the Dean of Trainers’ Affairs soon afterwards, meaning that the only things that had really changed were her direct responsibilities. Teio had been surprised that she hadn't chosen a position more directly involved with students, but Rudolf had explained that she wanted to be the vanguard that helped those who would be guiding the next generation. And it wasn’t like Teio could complain about working with her as a trainer, anyway. Now, though, Teio’s occupational proximity to Rudolf had her anxious, because Rudolf was the sole arbiter for Teio's request for a leave of absence.

Mejiro McQueen hadn't planned on spitting an entire cup of tea onto Teio's new suit. She had been attending a Dream Series banquet with her in celebration of an upcoming race that week, and was thoroughly enjoying the non-alcoholic drinks they had on offer without feeling any compulsions to liberate them from their cups. They had just broken away from a fascinating conversation with Fuji Kiseki about Japanese theater, and with her elbow locked with Teio’s and a string quartet playing Bach, McQueen would've rated her mood as “very good.” Unfortunately, Teio had then turned towards her and asked, “Hey, Queenie, do you know what the Omegaverse is?”

Chapter 5: Three Turns

Nice Nature laid in bed and listened to the patter of the afternoon rain. Bad weather had been a nuisance for most of Nice Nature’s adult life. It kept her customers at home, ruined her hair, and made it harder for her to run in the small pockets of free time available to her. On a normal day, the drizzle outside would have ruined her mood entirely. But today wasn’t a normal day. In fact, it was her first proper day off since the winter holidays. Nature’s mother and Teio had conspired to stop her from leaving for work, telling her that they would lock the doors on her and that Nature’s father was covering her kitchen prep work, which he hadn’t done in years. Nature still wasn't sure if Mom and Square would be able to communicate with him properly. But Teio said she wasn’t supposed to worry about all that. Teio, who had decided to intrude on her life after being given permission to stay at her home, and was not only taking Dancer to and from school, but was now attacking long-neglected dirt marks on the walls and mandating that Nature take breaks from work. So she’d slept in, went for a morning run while the clouds were still forming, and was now laying on top of her bedsheets with tofu in her stomach and a storm rolling in. It was the nicest thing anyone had done for her in years.

Buildings drifted by through the train window, unable to leave an impression in Akechi’s mind. Some part of him had hoped that the trip to Osaka, with its padded chairs and railed defiance of geography, would keep him occupied enough that he wouldn’t need to think. But no, he got to think for the next two-and-a-half hours. Good for him. He spent the first hour reading a book on environmental sciences he had found on clearance, then wasted fifteen minutes perusing the various pamphlets sticking out of the seat in front of him. At that point, the train service brought him a mediocre bento box that he picked at idly. Finally, with forty-five minutes left in the trip, he opened his phone contacts and began deleting numbers one by one.

Point's phone alarm finally went off. She silenced it and walked over to her restroom to get ready for the day. Her chestnut hair went mostly untamed as she pulled it into her usual ponytail—she’d taken after Teio in that regard. Point was two  taller than Teio, and had McQueen's violet eyes instead of Teio’s overbearing blues. That was maybe the only thing she liked about her appearance. But Teio’s hair was what people pointed out anyway.  Once she was presentable enough for the world, she collected her textbooks and homework and began to put everything into her school bag. For a brief moment, her hands rested on top of her most recent statistics project. She had a real talent for numbers that had gone unnoticed until she came to Tracen, thanks to her parents focusing less on that side of her education. She’d already been offered a letter of recommendation from one of her teachers if she applied to academic colleges. But she didn’t want to go to college. She was a Mejiro, and she wanted to win. She stuffed the report into her bag, then walked out of her room and slammed the door.

Nice Nature’s hand froze as she touched the Hiramatsu Blossom’s front door. Dancer looked up at her as she stood there, feet locked in place, ice burning her skin. “Are you alright, Mom?” She wasn’t. She should’ve been, but it was a Sunday, which meant she worked a much later shift than on weekdays. Twilight was setting in outside, and she watched the lights flicker on for the stores on her street from her place. The air was cool, her shift was over, and her legs were demanding an evening run once she put Dancer to bed. Then a car drove by with its headlights still turned off.

Tokai Point nodded and took one of the seats by her mom’s bedside. Teio took the other and leaned over the rim of the bed to look at the book McQueen was reading. “A Study in Blue, huh? Is Ryan giving you novel recommendations again?” “Yes. She’d only read the manga adaptation, but I decided to opt for the light novel instead. I’m enjoying it quite a bit.” “She’s got good taste, even if she won’t admit it.” “What are the doctors saying?” Point asked quietly. Teio and McQueen both turned to look at her. “The prognosis is fairly positive,” McQueen said after a moment. “Since I was proactive about getting it checked, they found the relapse quickly. I may not even need any chemotherapy.” “That’s amazing,” Teio said. “You’ll be better before you know it.” “I can only hope.” Tokai Point said nothing.

She'd never met anyone quite like Teio in all her life, and even though she was a footnote in Teio’s career, the third place to all her accomplishments, she was somehow still her friend. It was a little blessing. “And what about your husband Hideyoshi?” Teio asked. Ten chopsticks stopped moving in sequence all across the restaurant. “I know you said he was doing accounting work with the local businesses,” Teio said. “Is he still in that business, or—” She finally saw Nature’s dying expression. The sunlight greyed into monochrome. Nature had known the sword would fall, somehow. “He died, Teio.”
