Smith's changes put vunerable students at increased risk. They violate Charter rights of students who want the freedom/support to live authentically when parents won't support them. The laws promote bias and discrimination against kids who are just trying to be themselves.

The only way to socially transition fully is with parental support. So if a student could come out safely to get that support, they absolutely would.

If they don't have that support and can't get it, forcing that student to suffer more is not the right answer.

If a student could get a parent's support, they absolutely would and would hide nothing at all. Why?

Without it, they are being "dead-named" all over the school. Yearbooks, cast list, roll call, MS Teams, transcripts, etc - none of it changes without parental support.

So, what helps these students?

Somehow affirming what they are going through, and everyone treating you like how you feel.

And what’s the main way students do that at school? They choose a gender-affirming name and ask for their correct pronouns to be used.

• They may become depressed or withdraw so they don’t have to deal with others.
• Many dabble with drugs/alcohol as a way to cope.
• Some run away.
• Some become disengaged from school, or drop out.
• And for severe cases, they sadly consider or commit suicide.
